Some devices work regardless of not having a driver installed like my Passport external drive, and Dell printer. I have tried three different USB jump drives, Sony, Cruzer Mini, and Cruzer Ultra, all are not recognized and I cannot manually install drivers if they exist for Windows 8 on these or any devices.
I also have a HTC 8x Windows phone that it also doesn't recognize. Now you can install the driver. Right click on the start icon and open Device Manager.
In Device Manager click on the first item. On the Add Hardware Wizard window click on Next. Select Show All Devices and click Next.
Now click on Have Disk and locate to the extracted folder. After selecting click on OK. It's important for you to have confidence in the updated drivers you install.
